Abundant with agricultural lands, green spaces and clear watered coasts, England’s historic county Suffolk has plenty to offer the passing traveller or the established native. Whether you are looking to have fun, create memories or just simply relax, there are many places worth visiting in the county. Here are our top five picks for things to do in Suffolk, from the beautiful beaches to the lush parks and a whole lot more.

Chill at the Ipswich Waterfront

The Ipswich waterfront is a visual delight worth visiting. Whilst the port itself has been operational since Saxon times, it has recently transformed into a strip of places to eat, drink, listen to live music and hire stunning boats for a ride on the River Orwell.

You can treat your belly here with high-quality, local seafood from restaurants such as the Mariners. This classic brasserie fare on a renovated 1899 boat, offers elegant, wood-lined interiors and beautiful marina views.

However, if you are not looking to splash out, simply walk along the waterfront and take in the sights of the many impressive yachts parked as the sun sets across Suffolk.

Stroll along the Southwold Pier

In the mood for more stunning views? Then we recommend the Southwold Pier next! This is an ideal stop to have a fun family day out where you’ll find “delicious food, excellent shopping and eccentric British seaside fun.”

The pier board at Southwold organises events monthly that include special foodie days as well as classic Punch and Judy shows that add a festive flair to a day out by the sea. You don’t need to participate to have a good time and make unforgettable memories – all you have to do is show up, walk along the water and let the sea air rejuvenate you.

Plus, you can always let the kids, (or the kid in you), dig deep into the sand and sculpt the castle of your fantasies!

Take in the beauty of Christchurch Park

This historic public space was the first park in Ipswich, established in 1895. Today it boasts over 33 hectares of luscious flowers, shrubs, trees and grounds in the heart of town. Officially “re-opened” in May 2008, the park has plenty of space, flora and fauna and activities to explore.

This includes a specified play area for kids, ponds to feed ducks, wildlife areas, a tennis court, bowling greens and the Reg Driver Visitor and Education Centre. This “eco-friendly” Centre named after Reg Driver, the first Chairman of the Friends of Christchurch Park, contains several eco-features to study and is open seven days a week.

Whether you intend to walk your dog, calm your mind with a hike or tuck into a book on a bench, this green expanse is a top contender to soothe your soul in Suffolk.

Get spiritual at the St Edmundsbury Cathedral

St-Edmundsbury-Cathedral

If you are looking for a building with more than just beauty, we recommend visiting the St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds. This 1000-year-old cathedral has been a site of worship since 1914 after St James’s Church was built within the precincts of an Abbey, where rest the remains of Edmund, King of the East Angles.

The cathedral is now open to visitors every day from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The entry is free to St Edmundsbury Cathedral but a donation is always appreciated. Once at the cathedral, you can also join in the tours to appreciate the intrigue of The Ancient Library which houses over 550 books, mainly printed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. You can additionally view the treasures in the Crypt Treasury and awe at the Victorian stained glass in the Cathedral with windows that depict stories from the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Have fun at Felixstowe beach

The quaint town of Felixstowe has a lot to offer to charm your senses.

To begin with, you can wander along the seafront as you take in the Edwardian architecture of the buildings nearby, as well as enjoy the colourful beach huts and Seafront Gardens that have been newly reconstructed. At the seafront, there are also ice cream vendors that serve up a delicious scoop.

Further along, thrilling rides for kids are offered at Manning’s Amusements and Ocean Boulevard. The adults can join in on the fun with slot machines at the Pier and some Adventure Golf too!

In conclusion, you don’t need to flash the cash to have a good time in Suffolk. The beauties of mother nature are free and they are abundant in the county. Whether you choose to spend time at the beach, the waterfront or one of the many attractions in the popular town centres, there is plenty to explore and keep you busy.

Have you ever been to Suffolk before? If not, pack your bags and get going! The coast awaits you.
